Bass Clef’s music makes you happy. On »Free My Mind«, the opening track of his latest 12’’ for the British label Sneaker Social Club, you’ll even find happiness before the bass drum eventually kicks in after three minutes. Quite unusual for a techno-track, especially since this approach is normally to be found on raves. However, as we all know, Ralph Cumbers a.k.a. Bass Clef has found various ways to interpret the genre. While »Free My Mind« is held almost ludicrously simple at the beginning, the second part is enriched with elements from dubstep, drum’n’bass and African drums, outsmarting the track’s dullness. The following »Oh 2 B In Love« is much more complex in its rhythm, but nothing short of grooves, while its claps are almost being folded into a rumple. »Where I Keep My Head« is a disco-version on glass bottles with a strong undertow. Those waiting for the dominant acid-lines from Bass Clef’s previous records will be disappointed. And still, when listening to his »Moment Only EP«, you will hear how much Bass Clef appreciates the history of his genre – the greatest moments of which he picks up and re-interprets.
