Wolf Music (Record label)
WOLF Music is a British record label from London founded by Stu Clark and Matt Neale in 2009. »I had access to a classic and wanted to give it a fresh lick of paint«, Neale reminisces about the initial ignition of WOLF’s founding. From a lack of alternatives he founded with his old pal Clark his own label, on which the two DJs have since published a series of records, instead of waiting for somebody else to see to it. The first catalogue number – including remixes of the afore mentioned classic, Atmosfears’ »Dancing in Outer Space« – was soon followed by successors. The guiding question at WOLF Music is relatively simple, explains Neale: »Would we buy it ourselves?« If the answer is yes the next WOLF release is born. The two do not perform classic A&R work. Occasionally they receive exciting demos, tips from friends or refer back to old acquaintances, like Medlar, who has published the bulk of his releases on WOLF. Musically the squad – which had migrated to London during recent years – definitely follows a common theme. Panorama Bar resident and label operator Steffi, the Dutch jack-of-all-trades Fritz Wentink and the remix-nerd Red Rack’Em have all published their works on this label. They care about »real House culture«, as it states on Wolf’s homepage. What does that exactly mean? »Ultimately it is subjective, I could write a 500 page book about it and would still not be able to give you a 100% final answer«, Neale admits. However for him the most important thing is, is to be authentic. »Any way that you look at it, there’s an essence, which extends through the music and the people, who dance to it. When you study this culture, you will recognise things, which coincide with your own experiences in the past. It’s not about a time or a place, rather the feeling, which is awoken in you.« That seems so far very appropriate, since WOLF found its beginning with a very intuitive decision – and has since been doing very well.
