John Talabot, one of the young year’s high-fliers, comes from a place, where no one would have ever searched for him: from Barcelona. With »Sunshine«, John Talabot had already created a little hype over night. A summery electro-sound, directly from Europe’s maybe sunniest city – there could have been nothing better, really. At least, if it wasn’t for the artist’s self-conception, because he actually characterizes his music as »dark« and »shadowy«. And yes, when listening closely, even Talabot’s early releases reflect a hidden melancholy and depth behind the easy-going facade. Now, his debut, »ƒin«, doesn’t leave a single doubt anymore. Talabot has created a multifaceted electro-record, skillfully using a broad spectrum of genres, quoting them and ridding them of their context, while at the same time using much less samples than before. Still, or maybe exactly that’s why, the record is exciting in every single second and grooves along the imaginary border between deep house, disco, and indie-rock. And in center-point of all these complex compositions, the vocals can be found. Hence, it’s no surprise that the record’s most hypnotizing songs were made in cooperation with Ekhi, and mostly with his label-colleague Pional. With »ƒin« Talabot has come up with an incredible surprise by withstanding the pressure, refining his style and turning it inside out for everyone to hear. A permanent guest in the year’s best-of-lists – guaranteed.
