Gohan Ga Dekitayo preceded Tadaima and thus represents the definitive missing link between Akiko Yano‘s early work and her synthesizer phase. The jazz and rock influences still shine through, while the fact that Yano once taught the Yellow Magic Orchestra how to walk comes through with a vengeance. The fact that she covers YMO’s “Tong Poo” in between can be interpreted as a little pat on the back. Is the result mixed? Yes, it is. But also more versatile than anyone else in the techno-pop universe.
