They say that you should never meet your heroes and Mabe Fratti and Bill Orcutt never really did—their surprising collaborative album Almost Waking was recorded remotely, with the Guatemalan cellist and singer adding her touches to the anarcho-guitarist’s idiosyncratic compositions after the fact. This doesn’t mean that her contributions are merely additive: The eight pieces of Almost Waking feel truly collaborative and lively, resulting in an outstanding, singular type of music—a new kind of post-rock, perhaps.
