Everything, everything, everything is in here. All the vastness, all the joy, all the melancholy. This is music that can only arise from a deep sense of connection – and which creates an even deeper connection. Sikyi Highlife isn’t just good for the body. It also holds an important place in music history. K. Gyasi and the Noble Kings (featuring the legendary Thomas Frempong!) were, back in 1974, the first highlife band to incorporate keyboards and a full horn section. Although it is Highlife through and through, it has a style all of its own: the percussion is inspired by the Sikyi drum dance of the Ghanaian Akan peoples. A ‘youthful dance for leisure and flirting’, as they say. Naturally, no one should ever stop dancing this dance.
