Matt Berninger was the voice of The National for 21 years before releasing his solo debut album in 2020. Get Sunk followed in May 2025. The live album Get Sunk At Union Chapel (28 November 2025) combines both works and, like Get Sunk, opens with the sustained synths of »Inland Songs«, over which Berninger sings melancholically. On his own, he seems more vulnerable than as a frontman. »Serpentine Prison«, from his debut of the same name, reflects on his depression, carried by guitar riffs that mirror the subdued mood of 2020. »Times of Difficulty« pulls listeners back into the present — the guitar sounds brighter, as does his voice.
