Random Axe

Duck Down • 2011

What happens, when heavy Underground-Hip-Hop-ordnance like Black Milk, Sean Price and Guilty Simpson decide to collaborate? First of all, the band name Random Axe comes into being, and with it the plan to release a debut-album of the same name via Duck Down Music in the spring of 2009. One can only presume that it might be the combined tendencies towards perfection of the three artists that lead to the fact that the record has just now, two years later, found its way onto the record-store shelves. Whatever the reasons may have been, when Boot Camp Clik- and Heltah Skeltah-member Sean P, Stones Throw guarantor of quality Guilty Simpson and »Dilla-successor« Black Milk work together, consequentially, the expectations go through the roof. Hence, it’s even more disappointing when the valid risk of utter disappointment fulfills itself and only hard, dark drums can cause temporary moments of joy. Black Milk’s melodious samples, for which he is well-known and which have – deservedly – earned him his reputation as a »Superproducer«, sound unusually weak. Luckily, the producer/MC from Detroit knows how to compensate this lack of creativity throughout lyrical finesse. Simpson and P support all that energetically. What’s left in the end, however, is only the realization that any big expectations should be held back in the future.
