Bassrace are Morgan King and Nick Hook. In 1991, the UK duo released »Futurama«, a relatively timeless rave number on the Swedish label Btech, which was releasing a wide stylistic range of electronic music at the time, including licensed material from Trax Records. The Berlin record shop Sound Metaphors is now repressing the track on its affiliated label, in five different versions at once. The variants »Aqua Space Mix«, »Future Dream Mix« and »Hold It Held It Lost It« have existed since time immemorial, but Juan Ramos and Cocktail d’Amore resident Trent dresses »Futurama« in supposedly new attire. The original relies on heavy breaks, blending UK hardcore with trancey but stylish textures that provide the necessary weightlessness. In addition, a sample proclaims »Welcome To A Journey In The Future« – which is perhaps romantically explanatory from the perspective of today, but was nothing less than the naked truth in the early nineties. In the dreamy edit, too, straight drums and breaks alternate, but throb a little more concretely, a little more on this side. Of the three original versions, »Hold It Held It Lost It« reveals the highest sunrise compatibility; the supporting elements are found in every variation, often varying only in nuances. Juan Ramos also offers them all up, but keeps a lower profile and finishes with light-hearted 808 cowbells. Trent works in a long, muffled break that unloads into the raviest possible atmosphere; ultimately, the residency obliges.
