Non-European art music refers to highly developed classical musical traditions outside the Western cultural sphere. These include, for example, Indian, Arabic, Persian, Chinese and Japanese art music. They are characterised by their own tonal systems, performance practices, forms of improvisation and historically developed teaching traditions.
