Roots Reggae is a form of reggae characterised by spiritual and socially critical themes, which emerged primarily in Jamaica in the 1970s. It is characterised by Rastafarian influences, a warm off-beat groove, a driving bass line and, often, politically and religiously themed lyrics. The style had a significant influence on the international image of reggae.
