Sludge metal is a subgenre of heavy metal that has combined doom metal with hardcore punk and noise rock since the late 1980s. It is characterised by low-tuned guitars, a slow to sluggish tempo, harsh vocals and a dense, distorted sound. The style emerged primarily in the US underground scene.
