Vaporwave is a subgenre of electronic music that came into being in the early 2010s, as well as a visual art style and internet meme. It is characterised by the use of slowed-down, choppy and distorted samples of jazz, easy listening, R&B and lounge music from the 1980s and 1990s. The associated subculture is characterised by an ambiguous or satirical view of consumer capitalism and pop culture, and is distinguished by a nostalgic or sometimes surrealistic take on entertainment, technology and advertisements of the past decades.
