Anushka Chkheidze and Robert Lippok first met six years ago during a workshop in Tbilisi. Soon afterwards, they began working with other musicians on the project Glacier Music II – a truly monumental undertaking. From that collaboration grew the desire to continue making music together, but with less conceptual framing.
Their exchange across generations was meant to be inspired by their respective backgrounds, yet never confined by them. Lippok is associated with the crisp, dissonant electronica of the late 1990s, with minimal music also playing a formative role. Chkheidze, now living in the Netherlands, came of age musically in Georgian choirs.
The title of their joint album, Uncontrollable Thoughts, is no metaphor: the pieces continually shift their character, acting as genuine shapeshifters – meandering between ambient, classical elements and electronica. Lush melodic arcs are edged with subtle noises and disruptions, ensuring the music never tips into opulence. In the closing track »Opening«, memorable motifs resurface before the melody is swallowed by elegiac drones. These free-spirited pieces are underpinned by a rough-hewn production approach that lends them a warm, atmospheric glow.
