Beybonlar

Gelin Aysem

Arsivplak • 2022

What literally went around the world from California in the late ‘60s was indeed an aesthetic revolution. The youth of the world seemed to unite under the banner of psychedelia. Western musicians experimented with Indian music, in Latin America, Southeast Asia and Africa they ran their guitars through distortion and wahwah pedals, marrying their own traditions with rock ecstasies. Miraculous things happened in Turkey too. Artists like Erkin Koray and Barış Manço and bands like Moğollar caused a sensation. And three brothers, still almost kids, founded the group Beybonlar. In 68 they won the song competition Altın Kupa, in 69 they recorded their first and only single: their songs »Gelin Aysem« and »Nenni?« hardly suggest that Sefa Ulaştır, the band’s drummer, was just 12 years’ old at the time of recording. Both pieces are based on traditional tunes charged with heavy guitars, wild drum rolls and Bora Ulaştır’s plaintive vocals. This gem has already been reissued several times – but without the knowledge and involvement of the band. This new release in original design was urgently needed for this very reason.
