- Now that’s a number to savor. It’s the number of records released by Wild Oldham under the name of Bonnie »Prince« Billy so far – and that’s not even counting all the audio books, soundtracks, side-projects and acting activities. Hence, it’s only natural to think that Wolfroy Goes To Town can only be a hectic, sketchy piece of work. Sketchy: occasionally. Hectic: quite the opposite. Oldham focuses on his old strengths again. The text is in the center. And his guitar, which he uses cautiously, decidedly, and which almost decelerates everything. Only No Match and Quail & Dumplings in their country-esk buoyancy seem to fall back into the pattern of the two latest records. The rest is merely focusing on the beauty of simplicity. A song like There Will Be Spring perfections this principle and at the same time illustrates the only alleged flaw that’s to bemoan: here and there, there would be room for a little outburst, an emotional boost. But Oldham quite consciously does without those things. And who are we to argue with the artist at this point?
