Mother Is The Milky Way

Warp • 2022

Broadcast were the downtempo dreamers of the 2000s. The Warp Record label signed the band from Birmingham in England’s West Midlands. They released four albums, twice as many EPs and were touring Australia when shortly afterwards singer Trish Keenan passed away. »Mother Is The Milky Way« was to be the last record she helped create. That was in 2009. In the meantime, bassist James Cargill has finally brought himself to reissuing the estate. Several albums are being released. Milky Way glows. »Mother Is The Milky Way« leads the listener through a succession of guitar sketches and found sounds. In between, Trishan Keenan breathes from her notebook as if Kate Bush were on a backpacking trip to Alice’s Wonderland, where she meets Steven Stapleton from Nurse With Wound. A song like »In Here The World Begins« is the closest thing to Broadcast’s back catalogue. The rest is three chords and good will. The tape is manipulated. Samples from Czech New Wave soundtracks and a high-voltage connection bring forth a long lullaby. In between, someone pipes out sounds on a recorder. In the ensemble, it sometimes sounds like the world on a wire. Absolute solipsism which turns into paranoia. At the end, the birds are chirping. On the record. And in your head.
