Review R&B and Soul

Charles Bradley

Changes

Daptone Records • 2016

Charles Bradley the »Screaming Eagle Of Soul«, is celebrating an impressive return. With his third record, »Changes«, the late discovered soul wizard of 67 years is trying to finally achieve the well-deserved appreciation – for his works as well as his life. Once again, he is conjuring the power of love with this record that is also dedicated to his late mother, who died in 2014. So far so unexciting. What is exciting is that the title track is actually a Black-Sabbath-cover and that it sounds even more timeless and more variable. This is because he is not only supported by the Menahan Street Band like on his previous records but pretty much by all the luminaries of Daptone Records The Budos Band The Dap-Kings and his tour band The Extraordinaires. In addition, he invited the Sha La Das, the Gospel Queens and Saun & Starr to assist him in the studio as background singers. Hence, we’ve got these talented musicians’ concentrated soul powers coming out of each of the eleven new tracks, starting with the spoken intro »God Bless America« all the way to the elegiac gospel of »Slow Love«. Charles Bradly remains true to himself during all this, untamed, even ecstatic in his performance, so that we can look forward to his upcoming concerts all the more.
