Fauli Til Dauli

Minimal Wave • 2020

Søren Fauli is a Danish actor and film director. As a teenager he played in punk bands, but at about 19 he felt the need to make a solo album. According to the legend, he recorded »Fauli Til Dauli« with stolen equipment – synthesizer, drum computer – in one week. Not many records of the small edition on the Copenhagen label Gry are said to have been sold at that time. Later they circulated for remarkable prices on the swap markets. DIY through and through, this work by the self-taught Daily Fauli is far from being a masterpiece of technology. Particularly in the case of singing, there are limits. This is also true for the operation of his instruments. Everything is rudimentary, sketchily thrown down, spartan. And just in it so beautiful. For example, in »Bird«, when he tries a few »tones« up and down to complain that if he were a bird, he would fly, but he can’t because he isn’t one, it is difficult not to be touched by it. Almost Helge Schneider class. Other pieces seem like a parody of the eighties paranaoia, the stoically rumbling »Bus«, with which the album begins, would be a nice example. After all, the lyrics are about how the narrator feels observed while driving the bus. He contributed an instrumental minimal wave opus in the form of »No 1 On 2«. And that literally pushes the right buttons in its well-placed simplicity. Like the whole record in general.
