»Nothing« is the title of the new album by the trio led by fiddle genius Nicolas Jaar, multi-instrumentalist Dave Harrington and new drummer Tlacael Esparza, who is now a permanent member of the band after several joint projects. How convenient that the answer to the question what this album can do is rather the opposite of »nothing«. Already the opener »SLAU« pulls you gently and slowly into its maelstrom. With a sluggish beat and flickering guitars, the three take all the time in the world. Every note is allowed to breathe. Just don’t rush it.
Im Slowburner »Heavy Is Good For This« treffen Barjazz auf einen Funk-Geist, der kurz aufflackert und dann wieder verschwindet. Trotzdem bleiben die Tracks in ständiger Bewegung. In »S.N.C« drehen sich staubige Gitarren und Beats umeinander, wickeln sich auf, während »Graucha Max« fast tanzbar ist – aber sein ganz eigenes Ding abseits vom Dancefloor dreht. Genau wie »American References«, das mit seinem Trommelwirbel zwar aufdreht, sich aber immer wieder zum Experiment hingezogen fühlt. Im Gegensatz zu Jaars letztem Soloalbum »Piedras 1 & 2«, auf dem glitzernde Soundscapes und Ambient den Ton angaben, bauen er und seine Kollegen hier auf Post-Rock, der von Dub- und Funk-Geistern heimgesucht wird. Zusammen trommeln uns Darkside in eine Trance, aus der wir eine Dreiviertelstunde lang nicht entkommen dürfen.
