With no other band do artwork and sound go together like with Kammerflimmer Kollektief. The Karlsruhe ensemble has been combining low-key jazz with noise and electronics, sometimes more, sometimes less, since shortly before the turn of the millennium, albeit in different line-ups. »Schemen« is no exception: The dark green of the trees, the mirror, the blurriness, all this is there in the first seconds of this record. A bass casts its shadow over the swelling instrumentation, everything unfolds more and more into a homely yet eerie space. On »Fifth Chapter [kreuzweis]« and »Third Chapter [ungesagt, dann vergessen]« Kammerflimmer Kollektief briefly turn up the noise, but »Schemen« is made up more of those moments that feel painfully fleeting. Discographically speaking »Schemen« is one of the best albums the Kammerflimmer Kollektief have released. Like a force of nature, this sound grows and fades, contracts and dissipates. In the end, the listener is left alone in the forest, thrown back on themselves, confronted with eight pieces that sound as if they are taking root, penetrating everything that surrounds them. It requires attentiveness to step inside. But once inside, you soon find beauty in the irritation. And then you no longer want to leave.
