Katie Gately

Color

Tri Angle Records • 2016

Collecting sounds is a bit like looking for truffles: You never know where the big hit is waiting. However, while you tend to have a trusted truffle pig by your side when searching for truffles, you can only depend on your very own ears when looking for sounds. Plus, there are the friends who know of your passion, giving you a heads up when coming across a remarkable sound within their surroundings. As a sound editor for movies, Katie Gately who lives in Los Angeles, is used to dealing with different sources of sound through her job. Meanwhile, she is even using them to make music. But instead of assembling abstract collages from field recordings, on her album »Color«, she has come forward with substantial songs, carried by tuneful vocals. Even if she speaks of herself as a non-musician, she knows all about making music in a narrow sense. In particular, she knows how to mix seemingly chaotic sounds and – partially heavily electronically processed – vocals in order to sound neither random nor plain or conventional. Her songs are catchy in a rumbling and wild way, and that is where their great strength lies. It’s hidden in energy hard to control, which Katey Gately knows how to bundle. After all, it took some time for humans to control fire, too.
