Larry June

Spaceships on the Blade

Empire • 2023

Tireless West Coast hustler Larry June is back with a new album and project number 21 on the clock. Which isn’t entirely true anymore, because as this review is published, another Larry June long player, »The Great Escape« featuring The Alchemist, is already well on its way to breaking new music streaming records for the artist from Vallejo, CA, USA. With »Spaceships On The Blade«, the curious Larry June connoisseur will already be able to guess what is in store as soon as they look at the cover. That’s because, as with »Orange Print«, the Bay Area entrepreneur refrains from experimenting when it comes to visuals and sound aesthetics.

The pattern also weaves itself through here like a golden thread: Gangster pose in front of a sports car – check! Bass-heavy synth sounds – check! Laconic laid-back flow – check! Slicker hustler talk about girls, money and health – check! Compared to its predecessor, Larry June has refined the formula once more in detail, which is again not least due to the wavy cruiser beats from go-to guys like Jake One, Cardo, DJ Fresh, Sean House and The Alchemist.
