Lifted are responsible for one of 2024’s most unobtrusively great records, the album Trellis. What exactly the musicians Andrew Field-Pickering and Matt Papich were doing there was difficult to pin down, yet somehow they managed to improvise while combining the whole thing with driving ambient and rudiments of structured strumming, as if from post-rock, in such a way that happiness left one short of further words.
Now Lifted have taken on a concept album, and announced the concept right there in the title: Movie is a homage to cinema that sounds like a soundtrack collage of the freer kind. On the one hand, instruments drift along as before; on the other, they change direction far more often than usual, or are thrown off course by samples of every kind. Above all, Lifted incorporate voices from dialogues into their cinematic suites. They are supported by friendly colleagues, among them Motion Graphics on electronics and bagpiper Duncan Moore. This time, the openness feels more fragmented; in its patchwork character, it also has something of a demonstrative gesture: we want more clarity in the details, within the diffuse, within the larger whole. Which, in its own way, makes the thing interesting once again – though it is also easier to get lost in it.
