Om Unit

Aeolian EP

Civil Music • 2012

The word »Om« in hinduism means a hollow, booming sound that created the universe. On »Aeolian EP«, OM Unit presents a sinister mix of Instrumental Hip Hop and electronic Bass Music, which can blow life into just as well anything with its enthralling melodies. Diverse influences are scattered on the EP, which is identifiable in the music of Jim Coles. The London-based producer starts with vast synth melodies on »Ulysses«, held together by a dripping beat structure and rising memories of Kuedos of Eighties Film Soundtracks. The vocal support by Tamara Blessa creates a glamorous atmosphere on the scratchy Boom Bap-Structure of »Dark Sunrise«, and »Lightworkers Call« turns out to be a perfectly produced Hip Hop variation, which is furnished with sound references to the G-Funk era or American Westcoast and builds up to a broad acoustic dominance. This is probably also thanks to the Dubstep producer Kromestar, whom OM Unit worked with on this track. The suitably named final track »Slowfast Mix« turns out to be all the more interlaced with a rhythm that reminds one of Chicago Juke and some calm elements, which doesn’t mean any contradiction. The joy of variation OM Unit uses on the five tracks remains exciting. The disc is being completed with two remixes of »Ulysses«, which unfortunately don’t differ enough from the original, though. Whereas Reso delivers an analoguely sounding 170 BPM drum structure as a foundation, Sweatson Klank goes the opposite way and turns the distinct rhythm of the original into a calm flow. The skilful production OM Unit uses to explore a broad space of frequency and to create his own deep universe of sound is to be emphasised. This will make any good sound system vibrate.
