The idea concocted by Jon Hassell and Brian Eno to give primitive music forms a sonic framework with the latest technology, file under: Fourth World, has been a constant companion for the last five years or so. Besides musicians who are currently dealing with this hybrid (most prominently RAMZi, Black Merlin or Xyr), there are also a lot of artists rediscovered who were already working in this direction 25 years ago (O Yuki Conjugate, Michel Banabila, Jorge Reyes). Among the latter is Rapoon, a project by Zoviet France co-founder Robin Storey. His 1993 album »Vernal Crossing« was one of the reissues of the year two years ago. With »Fallen Gods«, also originally released in 1994 by Staalplaat, the Spanish label Abstrakce now presents another reissue that is no less worth listening to. The differences are minimal. Perhaps they lie in the fact that the rhythms on “Vernal Crossing” make their way more like twisted vines, while in »Fallen Gods« the jungle is plowed. Tendentially. Because limiting the music to that would be too short-sighted. Myriads of ideas are to be found here. That makes it difficult to get into the tracks. But once you’re in, it’s hard to get out. The drone “Breathing Gold” alone is a revelation. By the way, Colin Potter was responsible for the mastering of the reissue.
