Slugabed

Time Team

Ninja Tune • 2012

After listening to this album you better go and splash some water into your face. You have to come clear after this experience. So much happens on these twelve tracks, which is completely wacky and strange and the continuous changes of speed make the listener all dizzy. Yep, Slugabed is firing off something with this debut album for NInja Tune. He can hardly explain himself what he created here: »It‘s to do with deep feelings about mostly inexpressible things«. I assume with »Time Team« he’s trying to find out what Star Wars would sound like if Nyan Cats fought each other instead of clones. Every drum is followed by a glittering tail, laser sounds chirr after every base beat. On top of it all, elves form a choir with chipmunks; well, you’d need cartoon-expressions to describe all the different sounds. The result of it all is powerful, base-y Cyberfunk, with remembrances of HipHop, Rave and 8-Bit. Sometimes it’s a bit over the top. All in all, though, Slugabed succeeds in balancing out the absurdity with harmonious passages. So, after having listened to »Time Team« you feel all quirky and blurry, it makes you think about Star Wars, unicorns and club-raves, but overall it leaves you fascinated and impressed by the innovative and crystal clear sounds.
