Honey Soundsystem

Honey Soundsystem is an American record label from San Fransisco founded in 2010 by Jacob Sperber (alias Jackie House), Jason Kendig, Josh Cheon, and Robert Yang (alias Robot Hustle, or also Bezier).

The story of Honey Soundsystem, which also operates under the shortened name HNYTRX, goes back further than 2010 when the first compilation titled ‘Brotherhood’ was published. Originally it was all about four DJs and producers, who made a name for themselves in their hometown because of their club nights, and are since then internationally active. Honey Soundsystem is also not the only label which has emerged from this connection; besides the shortly lived imprint Discaire, Dark Entries, an obscure synthie-record specialist is especially well-known under the leadership of Josh Cheon. Honey Soundsystem serves the dance floor may more than the latter. Besides republishing releases – together with Dark Entries – of the 1982 past away Disco and Hi-NRG legend Patrick Cowley, and common releases with Cocktail d’Amore from Berlin, the work of Honey Soundsystem clearly focuses on productions with musically historic value, with many styles blending into one another, from Disco to Acid House.

What is more important, however, is the political claim of Honey Soundsystem, which emanates from their inclusive parties, as well as from the label’s roster; on Honey Soundsystem the music from gay people appears. »In the underground, there are many artists, who are gay and have the same taste as us, walk in our same shoes, and perceive culture in a very special way.« Robert Yang, who publishes as Bezier, both on Dark Entries, as well as on Honey Soundsystem, explains. That should never be understood as a restriction, continues the synthie-nerd. »We place a lot of value on diversity and look for talents, who talk widely of experience-values, which we want to present in order to draw a line between the musical styles. People, who have the same ambition as us.« Honey Soundsystem is not alone as the rallying point of various positions between Disco, House, and the occasional outbreak in the Techno department, but it also positions itself sociopolitically. »A timeless sound is as important to us as our common gay past«, says Yang. Actually the story of Honey Soundsystem dates back even further than the founding of the eponymous DJ-collective.
