The Nite Owl Diner
The Nite Owl Diner is a 2013 New York founded record label by Chrissy Murderbrot and Alex Burkat. Meanwhile the Nite Owl Diner is based in Chicago, Illinois.
Whilst Chrissy (formerly known under the DJ pseudonym as Chrissy Murderbrot or Chris E.Pants) looks after the label’s daily routine, Alex Burkat is involved first and foremost in the creative decisions. “Alex and I have a very different taste as far as House is concerned,” explains Chrissy. “When we can agree then we know that it must be good!” The two understand The Nite Owl Diner as a project, which on the one hand they can have fun with in respect of design and on the other hand pay tribute to the American club culture, in which they grew up in. That especially means – Chicago. Next to a Canadian Nautiluss release are acts like The Black Madonna, Chrissy and Burkat themselves or Olin which shapes the sound by The Nite Owl, even though Chrissy and Burkat got to know each other in New York City. The Nite Owl Diner has taken on exactly the attitude of the House music’s birthplace: “We want to work together with people who we like to hang out with and who share our values: progressive, feminist, anti-fascist, anti-homophobic etc.” To put it briefly; those who can bring along wit and the right tunes can become a regional, independent part of the Nite Owl Diner clique.
Perhaps indeed a good portion of humour helps all the more. Just a look at the official homepage – a fake yelp portal – makes it clear that Chrissy and Burkat take their music very seriously but not themselves. A red thread runs through the layout of the records which among others comes with menu cards of the Nite Owl Diners. [In terms of the packaging it is important to us to create something that is fun, seems bizarre and is interesting. But honestly the people can just as well steal our music from the internet which is why we would like to give them a reason not to do so. Every release should get people talking to create the desire that makes people really want to get hold of one of the 12".” Sounds calculated however it’s only forward thinking. Especially since the two make sure not to overdo it and to offer their records at reasonable prices. Artificial shortage and other purchase incentives are avoided due to their love for music. On the issue, which release for him has been the most important, Chrissy answered almost indignantly: “That is like asking a parent who is their favourite child! I love them all!” That is obvious to hear.
