Hollie Cook

Shy Girl / Front Line

Mr Bongo • 2025

Hollie Cook stays true to herself – and yet, her new single Shy Girl sounds anything but dusty. As a teaser for her fifth album, announced for release on Mr Bongo in October, it once again demonstrates how confidently she brings nostalgic Lovers Rock influences into the present. While the title track – with its clean production, buttery melodies, and flawless phrasing – may sound classic at first, it quickly becomes clear: this is not just a rehash of the past, but a genuine reinvention.

On the B-side, Frontline offers a Ska update that sounds equally bright and optimistic – summery, danceable, relaxed. Even though Cook describes her music as “Tropical Pop,” her stylistic roots remain unmistakable. Somewhere between reggae, ska, and Lovers Rock, she lends familiar sounds an elegance that can’t be taught – it’s simply there.
