The busy Japanese rare-groove band Nautilus have taken inspiration from iconic film and television melodies for their new album Sunken Scores. It will be released on 8 May 2026 via Oonops Drops and is available exclusively from HHV on limited brown vinyl. The 13 reworkings sound energetic yet relaxed, taking a few surprising turns along the way.

Groove through the back door

The trio succeed both with a cheerfully strolling interpretation of Angelo Badalamenti’s »Twin Peaks Theme«, which in its original form has a rather ominous feel, and with the theme from the schmaltzy eighties series Love Boat, which Nautilus enrich with groove – vocally supported by singer and actress Anna Sato. Kate Bush’s »Running Up That Hill«, once the soundtrack to the BBC youth drama Running Scared (1986) and recently brought to a new generation through Stranger Things, is given airy jazziness. Surprisingly, Klaus Doldinger’s Tatort theme also finds its place. Put through the Nautilus wringer, it loses none of its dynamism but gains in playfulness.
