Drake

If you’re reading this it’s too late

Republic • 2015

There’s hardly anyone whose idea of music captures the essence of our times as well as Drake’s. Next to Kendrick Lamar, there is no one that everyone could agree on other than the crooning rapper from Toronto. It doesn’t even matter if he releases a mixtape or a record: on »If you’re reading this it’s too late«, he is delivering yet another impeccable package of razor-sharp raps, catchy (yet amateurish) vocals, flawless beats and a hint of vulnerable superstar-personality, permanently switching between arrogant hubris and self-pity, because it’s just too damn lonely at the very top. Big gestures from the ice-cold oh-so-sensitive just don’t get old. In addition, the beats by Boi-1da and Noah »40« Shebib are not only shaping this record immensely, but they are also well up to date. You can find cuddly pop-instrumentation with electronic warmth and/or cold underneath next to hard as hell snares and crackling hi-hats. In short, they’re celebrating the whole range of OVO-sounds. There are additional and unexpected beat-switches, like on »Preach«, and it’s easy to forget that the actual record »Views from the 6« is still to follow later this year. It’ll be the first release after the end of the cash-money-era, which will contractually end with this one. Hence, it’s neither mixtape nor record, but rather a transmission towards an even more glorious future, having the wind of zeitgeist blowing in its back. If you’re reading this, it’s probably too late and it is already sold out.
