With »Neuclidea«, Space Dimension Controller land for the first time on Running Back, which you can hear on the opener »Life Window«. It marches along at a moderate pace, whistles and drones, and if the break in the middle of the track were a drum roll, it would immediately beam the listener into a club where Gerd Janson is currently spinning the turntables. It reminds us of British dance music of the noughties and 2010s by consorts like Floating Points, Daphni or Four Tet with its melodic structure, the emphatically flat production and its pop appeal. You wouldn’t necessarily attribute the decidedly stronger title track to Jack Hamill, the real name of the Space Dimension Controller, either. Less funk, less house, no vocals, less juice, but a strangely hollowed-out kick that dances into the sunrise under a sugar-sweet melody. If I’m not mistaken, people will still be listening to this number during the forthcoming festival summer. It is likely to make most ravers think back to their first encounter with electronic dance music, a sure dose of nostalgia that also conjures up occasional associations with Jon Hopkins. In third place, Bristolian Hodge abruptly snaps you out of your candy-coloured dreams and transforms »Neuclidea« into an absurd, delirious rave grenade for big room moments without a blanket but the coldest of cold sweats the next morning. At the end, Hamill removes the veil and launches himself into orbit with his signature sound on »Sunset Operator«.
