Doom metal is a form of heavy metal that emerged in the early 1970s from the early Black Sabbath sound. It is characterised by slow tempos, low-tuned guitars, heavy riffs and a dark, often melancholic atmosphere. The style emphasises weight and repetition rather than speed and has influenced numerous variations between traditional metal, psychedelic and extreme metal.
