Indie folk is a subgenre of folk that, since the 1990s, has combined acoustic-based songwriting with a singer-songwriter aesthetic within the indie scene. It is characterised by minimalist arrangements, introspective lyrics, melancholic moods, and releases on independent labels, through independent distributors and within independent scenes.
