Anatolian folk-punk band Lalalar plays concert in Berlin

14.03.23

The Turkish band Lalalar will give a concert at Gretchen in Berlin. On May 2, 2023, the three musicians from Istanbul will bring their debut album to the capital. »Bi Cinnnete Bakar« (English: In the face of madness) was released in 2022 on Les Disques Bongo Joe, which already helped Altın Gün to a breakthrough. Compared to them, Lalalar dispensed with the psychedelic hippie sounds of the 1970s, preferring to sparkle with no-future punk over the Turkish scale. No wonder that Iggy Pop announced the three musicians in his BBC show as »Turkey’s most innovative alternative artists«.

Iggy Pop is a fan already

Lalalar played numerous concerts at festivals such as Sziget and Palp last year. In this way, the trio of Ali Güçlü Şimşek, Barlas Tan Özemek and Kaan Düzarat has quickly gained a fan base that extends far beyond their hometown of Istanbul. Lalalar, by the way, is a play on words. In the Ottoman Empire, the officials responsible for educating princes were called “Lālā”, writes the German newspaper taz. Who is educating whom here? Perhaps we can find out at the concert at Gretchen.
