For a moment, I thought I was having a heart attack – then I realised it was simply the joy of hearing that Angine de Poitrine will be coming to Germany for a handful of concerts this autumn. The duo from Saguenay, Quebec transform complex, microtonal rock music into a collective ritual somewhere between Don Caballero and Tinariwen. M for Montréal was the first sign that this was going to become something big. Then, last month, came a video on KEXP – currently at 6.3 million views, and still climbing.

Straight to the point
Khn de Poitrine has built himself an instrument: guitar on top, bass below, plus a loop station. Klek sits at the drum kit. Both wear black-and-white robes, masks on. Neither says a word. Instead: hand signals. Demonstration. Repetition. The audience crouches down – then rises again. Only when Khn plays does the nose begin to twitch. Vol. II will be released on 3 April. The title says everything about the aesthetic: no ornament, no grand statements. Six new pieces, initially digital only. Vinyl to follow. Tickets: now, before they are gone.
