Daft Punk – Unveröffentlichter Track von 1994

Auf der am 19. September erscheinenden Labelwerkschau »Soma Records: 20 Years« findet sich neben einer opulenter Trackliste auch ein unveröffentlichter Titel von Daft Punk aus den Anfangstagen anno 1994.

Beim Blick auf die am 19. September erscheinende Labelwerkschau des schottischen Qualitätsimprints Soma Records fällt trotz opulenter Trackliste auf insgesamt drei CDs vor allem das erste Stück sofort ins Auge. Das mit Drive Unreleased 1994-betitelte Stück entstammt einer alten DAT-Kassette, die Daft Punk ehemals als B-Seite zu Rolling & Scratching auf der Soma-Katalognummer 25 eingeschickt hatten. Die allerdings wurde im Jahre 1995 in der noch Pre-Homework-Ära durch Da Funk ersetzt – der Rest ist Geschichte. Auf der Suche nach alten Fotos, Masterbändern und sonstigen Spuren der Soma-Entstehungsgeschichte ist man in Glasgow wieder auf auf das DAT gestoßen und war vom Überraschungsfund mehr als begeistert: »We hooked up the DAT machine and inserted the tape with the delicacy of a surgeon, pressing play and praying that for one, the tape contained what we hoped, and two, that it didn’t chew it like a dog chewing on a bone. In amongst the hiss and crackle, the most monstrous 909 kick drum thudded. Daft Punk’s Drive track had been rediscovered. Playing through was Live Daft Punk; freaky vocals, pounding Roland drums & synths and that archetypal DP compression. After standing in silence, witnessing this moment, the track faded off and we heard the sound of the French spoken word that the recording had been made over; the remnants of their parents audio collection.« Doch Daft Punk hin und her: Auch ein Blick auf die gesamte Tracklist der Compilation verspricht ein üppiges Manü mit etlichen Techno-Klassikern. CD1 offeriert eine Breite Soma-Classics, die beiden anderen Datenträger wurden von den beiden Soma-Veteranen Slam und Silicone Soul bewerkstelligt.
