Techno legend Jeff Mills plays concert in Berlin, doing without techno

30.05.2023

As part of the new TingelTangel event series, living techno legend Jeff Mills returns to Berlin this autumn. On September 17, 2023, he will perform his programme »Tomorrow Comes The Harvest« at the Theater des Westens.

»Tomorrow Comes The Harvest« is an improvisation-based concept where acoustic meets electronic. It was created in 2016 by Jeff Mills and the late Nigerian drummer Tony Allen, the father of Afrobeat, who died in 2020. Together with keyboardist Jean Phi Dary, the trio toured internationally until Tony Allen’s unexpected death.

Machines, percussions, improvisations

Now the improvised live show is performed with percussionist Prabhu Edouard. They already played together last year at the Delos archaeological site. If you want to get an idea of what happens when these three musical geniuses come together, you need look no further:

The ambitious TingelTangel series owes its name and inspiration to the short-lived venue that was once located in the basement of the theatre. It was founded in 1931 by the composer Friedrich Hollaender, who had to flee two years later because of his Jewish background. Back then, high-profile international artists* such as Josephine Baker and Marlene Dietrich performed there. To honour this history, pioneering artists such as Laurie Anderson, Matthew Herbert and Jeff Mills will soon be performing on the main stage.
