When it comes to Chaz Bear, the wonderfully dusty description »jack-of-all-trades« fits. As a graphic designer, he works for Vans and Nike, and as a musician he collaborates with everything from Flume to Tyler, the Creator, Travis Scott and Haim. Now the seventh studio album under his moniker Toro y Moi, »MAHAL«, will be released on Dead Oceans on April 29, 2022. Both the guests – Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Ruban Neilson, Salami Rose Joe Louis, Neon Indian, Sofie Royer and The Mattson 2 – and the sound are as colourful as the Filipino jeepney on the cover: from psych-rock to deep house, from 70ies funk to post-rock, with the chillwave subgenre he helped establish about 12 years ago always shining through. The exuberant, funky vibe of the single »Postman«, whose video celebrates the Filipino culture of the Bay Area, and the soft, melancholic psychedelic rock of »Magazine« (see video) in a way define the boundaries of this broad musical field. Together with the third single, the groovy »The Loop« (see video below), this already gives us a lot of anticipation for the full album. A limited edition on red vinyl will be available exclusively from HHV Records.
