Alek Lee, born in Tel Aviv and now based in Athens, has fully internalised the Balearic sound – and on his new album he plays with its codes as freely as he does precisely. His tracks are not mere homages to Ibiza clichés, but atmospheric pieces that oscillate between day and night, sun and moon, club and chill-out. The groove pulses slowly, the sounds linger long, the melodies are warm – and above it all, the sky remains wide open.
Was Was Was is the heart of the album, clocking in at twelve minutes: a breezy dub jam built around guitar, spaciously arranged yet never losing tension. In general, Alek Lee’s music is clearly structured, rooted in electronic aesthetics and produced predominantly in the digital realm. Space is left between elements so that nothing overlaps or crowds – instead, an open-hearted warmth unfolds, reaching out for connection.
Where on his 2017 EP Sfarot he still made use of children’s voices, this time the instruments are left to speak entirely for themselves. A distorted guitar occasionally enters the otherwise clear sonic image – but even that doesn’t cloud the mood. On the contrary: this is music meant to bring people together. And it does.
