Apathy

Honkey Kong

Dirty Version • 2011

On his third solo LP Apathy presents himself in top form. He brings us Honkey Kong, an album which not only profits from its massive line-up of MC’s and producers but also from a diversity which was not to be expected. Of course there are many tracks that feature good ol hard-hitting battlelyrics and great antisocial punchlines over opulent beats but the MC from Connecticut also delivers thoughtful songs with deeper meaning like the Evidence-produced Check To Check. Here Ap gives us an understanding of the struggle he is facing as an underground MC with almost no financial income. On the entertaining 1:52 AM the self-proclaimed Albino Gorilla tells the story of a break-in from three points of view and proves that his storytelling-abilities are great as well. Peace Connecticut is a fond tribute to the place where he grew up and I dedicate this to you is a thank you to his longtime partner. Especially on this one the beat by producer Smoke The World sets the mood right with a lovely vocal sample and some banging drums. Another very thoughtful track is the wonderfully honest It’s only Hip Hop where Ap makes clear when fans go to far and become an annoyance. And if that sounds to you like the Mother Molestor became soft you only have to listen to Fear Itself, produced by DJ Muggs (who was obviously in a great mood) and you will know Ap is still a mean motherfucker. Another proof for that is Stop what ya doin where he rips the mic apart with his best man Celph Titled over a rocking beat from DJ Premier. If you still don’t have enough and you miss Ap’s pals from the Army Of The Pharaohs crew or the Demigodz you just have a listen to Army Of The Godz where you can hear a whole bunch of them. You see, Honkey Kong has more to offer than you might have expected or that you might have wished for. Great effort Ap, keep it up.
