Atmosphere

Fishing Blues

Rhymesayers • 2016

Whitney Ford sings the Blues. To be more exact, the Fishing Blues, as per album title. But no worries; Atmosphere, Minneapolis’ finest makes no Everlast move. Instead on their 8th LP, MC Slug and DJ Ant adhere to the prescription, which has for them, even in their 22nd year of service, proven to be most reliable; casual, however, with vigorous rhymed storytelling in tangible pictures, also with pulled down trousers. Take a look at track 7, »Next To You«: »Now I’m masturbating with some vaseline«. His personal mental state provides Slug with a fairly long, healthy optimism, and some kind of old age wisdom. He’s not 40 years of age anymore. Take another look at »The Shit We’ve Been Through«. And so on »Fishing Blues«, Slug spins a fine, woven fisherman’s story about aged heroes, who are confronted with the remains of their careers. He advises to create a tightly woven network of acquaintances. Or cast off as a more experienced ego-shooter in murky waters of police violence. Support is provided by qualified characters: Kool Keith, MF Doom, Aesop Rock, The Grouch, Rhymesayer´s apprentice Dem Atlas, and the singer Kim Manning, to be precise. Like a flush of flowing beats, Ant, his homie, spreads out the basis, that underlines the emotional mood,_smoothly_and with a blind understanding. Even though, one has to agree, the sound spreading over the total length of the 18 tracks could have done with a couple of more edges and corners, here and there.
