Black Flower

Motions

Sdban Ultra • 2026

The pieces simply fought back. According to the announcement, the three songs on this EP were left over from the sessions for Black Flower’s current album Kinetic, but refused to end up in the bin. And why not, if the Belgian band can open this quarter-hour with a bang like »Diagonal Walk«? Drums and synthesiser open up the space before the saxophone barges in. All of this slowly drifts into a psychedelic meditation that finds its way from rhythm into groove. Jazz with a little funk rolls along across these six minutes.

»Out of One, Many«, by contrast, immediately picks up polyrhythms and feels more askew – yet never tips over. Even this piece, Black Flower eventually bring into a groove. The strength of this EP, and of Black Flower’s sound in general, is that it never becomes overwhelming. Everything unfolds in complex but legible patterns. The melodies never run away; they remain within the song’s tempo. It is controlled energy that Black Flower release across these three pieces.
