Ethio-Jazz

Ethio-jazz is the hypnotic fusion of Ethiopian pentatonic music and western jazz that emerged in the 1960s. It is characterised by distinctive 6/8 chickchicka rhythms, circling bass lines and floating brass arrangements. Significantly developed by Mulatu Astatke and instrumental groups such as The Ibex Band. Renaissance through the Ethiopiques compilations of the 1990s.
