Your Day Will Come being the title of Chanel Beads’ second album as well is confusing at first, even for streaming services, which tend to display both albums as one. Yet the identical title documents the thematic development of Shane Lavers, supported by singer and guitarist Maya McGrory, alias Colle, and violinist Zachary Paul. What remains are the hypnotic, shimmering soundscapes, as well as the majestic strings and breath-thin synth sounds. Everything blurs into an elusive mixture of ambivalent ambient pop, folk and cloud rock.
The second version deals with themes such as certainty and doubt, nihilism and love, digital artificiality and physical immediacy. They become the principle of a densely worked album that consciously leaves ruptures and imperfections in place. The result is a state of suspension that renders the precarious hope of its figures in sound: Your Day Will Come.
Chanel Beads’ music does not seek redemption through clarity. It turns uncertainty itself into a form of support: in »Silver Cup«, the dramatic violin combines with floating sound fields and Maya McGrory’s dreamy vocals to form a contrast of pain and hope. »Song for the Messenger« becomes increasingly frayed through pedal steel guitar, fragments and pitch-shifted vocals. »Outside Your Life« develops from ominous drone into nervous drums and emotionally charged samples. »Tyler Richard« moves from ghostly keyboard sounds to nightmarish screams, and in »Boss« the voice is finally distorted so heavily that it barely seems human.
