Cinecittàx is the name of the experimental debut album by French artist Che Vuoi, who brings together almost everything that can be brought together: jazz, pop, techno, punk, songs that feel like film music, and others that could easily belong to a French musical thanks to their spoken vocals. The record features whispering and mowing; elsewhere, something chirps in the background. At other moments, you hear children laughing or a radio-frequency search tone.
In »Suzanne«, Che Vuoi speaks with a clear, strong, expressive voice, in dialogue with a piano. The track feels like a French short film, with images forming in the listener’s mind. On »Étoile Distante«, the album transports the listener to a bar, where Che Vuoi sings over mantra-like, staccato bass and percussion tones. While she whispers and breathes on other tracks, this one foregrounds expressive, elongated phrases delivered in a deep, smoky voice.
With her debut, released by Disques De La Spirale in Paris, Che Vuoi presents herself as a versatile artistic figure who plays with instruments, everyday sounds and her voice alike. Each track is a self-contained vignette, assembling sound layers like a collage. Everything is here: croaking, static noise, tinny hammering, screams, laughter. A bold first album that leaves open which direction the Brussels-based artist will take in the future.
