The Equations Collective is made up of artists who are primarily known for techno releases: the group Aroma Pitch and Sphera De Noumenon, the duo Artefakt and Aphelion, who was most recently featured on a compilation on their label De Stijl. For the album »The Helicon Sessions«, they came together on the mountain of the same name in Greece to record some abrasive yet atmospheric live sessions that oscillated between ambient moments of calm and stretches marked by a technoid drive. In view of the multidisciplinary and collaborative approach of the collective, it is probably not surprising that this first release is followed by a remix record and that someone like Lena Platonos would contribute the first of the two new interpretations. Over foreboding sound textures, sizzling rain noises and beats subtly buried in the mix, she whispers lyrics in Greek, working with reverb effects and occasionally even doubling her voice to great effect. Morphine founder Rabih Beaini takes a more hands-on approach on the flip – or at least that’s how it seems at first. What begins with a simple rhythm builds into a complex crescendo when everything gets louder and the individual drum patterns get out of sync. The inspiration for this comes from West Java, and indeed the interlocked, dry 808 sounds are sometimes reminiscent of gamelan and other forms of traditional Indonesian music. In their own way, both artists retrospectively create a conceptual framework for the free-flowing improvisations of the collective.
