The hype surrounding the New York band Geese has reached a surprising scale: their supposed masterpiece Getting Killed has become the consensus pick for rock album of the year. But is the record really that good?
Yes. Getting Killed is the only album from 2025 I would confidently call an indie classic – and one I’m certain I’ll be listening to for the rest of my life.
Geese seem to fill a gap. They are not another batch of introverted indie darlings, but present themselves as a hungry band in the lineage of The Strokes or even The Rolling Stones.
While Projector (2021) still revolved around semi-original post-punk, 3D Country (2023) was already an exuberant rock album full of oddities and small miracles. After frontman Cameron Winter became something of a poster boy for the current indie landscape with his 2024 solo album Heavy Metal, expectations for a new Geese record were high. And indeed: Getting Killed delivers across the board, capturing the paranoia of our time with humour, impressing with chaotic drums and ambitious song structures, and offering an unexpectedly optimistic outlook. »I have no idea where I’m going, here I come«, it goes at the very end.
Geese make modern classic rock for the brainrot generation. Younger listeners (like myself) find it refreshing, while older indie fans may be reminded of great rock records from the past. It doesn’t get much better than this.
