For more than ten years, Scott Morgan – a.k.a. Loscil – has been working on his very own version of electronic music. His compositions are timeless and contemporary at the same time, while first and foremost being committed to Dub. The Canadian musician is always up to date in terms of technical equipment and sounds, his repertoire never gets old and is still valid years after being produced. Scott Morgan treats his productions as if he was a painter. This has especially become apparent in recent years, when he perfected his style. Since then, he has been choosing certain subjects to set to music, using all kinds of different musical devices. On »Endless Falls«, which he released in 2010, he turned the topic of autumn and its landscapes – built from wet-cold weather conditions – into music, creating his best work so far. Now, for »Sketches From New Brighton«, he has taken musical walking-tours along English and Canadian coasts and harbors. »Container Ships« come and go, »Hastings Sunrise« is being watched, »Collision Of The Pacific Gatherer« tells the story of an unpleasant encounter of a ship and the Second Narrows Bridge in Vancouver in 1930. The bridge itself got its very own track by the name of »Second Narrows«. The word »Sketches« in the title tells us something about the style – Scott Morgan really tries to use as few lines as possible to draw his scenes. He works like someone who is very confident about his profession – and that is really the only thing to be bemoaned on this record. Melodies, surfaces and sounds are put together in perfection, the dub sometimes glides into ambient territories, sometimes towards techno, but always at the very right moment, always a bit too smooth. All I’m missing is a tiny bit of friction.
